The School of Electrical and Information Engineering (SEIE) originated from the Automation major established at the very beginning of the founding of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry (approved by the State Council) in 1977 and the Household Appliances major established in 1979. Then, the Department of Control Engineering was established in 1984. It was renamed the Department of Information and Control Engineering in 1999 and was renamed the School of Electrical and Information Engineering in 2004. In 2022, it was approved as the Henan Provincial Characteristic Industry College for Intelligent Manufacturing of Electrical Equipment.

Currently, there are a total of 2410 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the school. It has five full-time undergraduate majors, namely Electrical Engineering and Its Automation, Automation, Smart Grid Information Engineering, Rail Transit Signal and Control, and Robot Engineering.

Among them, the major of Electrical Engineering and Its Automation is a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, a major accredited by China Engineering Education, a pilot major of the "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, and a national major comprehensive reform pilot major. The Automation major is a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, a major accredited by China Engineering Education, a comprehensive reform pilot major in Henan Province, and a national pilot major for the integration of professional and standardized education.

The school has two provincial first-level key disciplines (Electrical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering). It has also established one characteristic backbone discipline group in Henan Province (Intelligent Manufacturing of Electrical Equipment).

The school currently has one first-level doctoral degree authorization program in Electrical Engineering, two first-level academic master's degree authorization programs in Electrical Engineering and Control Science and Engineering, and four professional master's degree authorization fields in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Robot Engineering.

Faculty

The school has always adhered to the principle of putting talents first and regarding teachers as the main body in its school-running process. It has vigorously promoted the strategy of "strengthening the school with talents", gathering and cultivating a number of high-level discipline leaders and academic backbones.

Currently, the school has one strategic scientist, one national renowned teacher, one national model teacher, one specially appointed professor in Henan Province, two outstanding teachers in Henan Province, one outstanding expert in Henan Province, three academic and technological leaders in Henan Province, six outstanding talents and outstanding young people in scientific and technological innovation in Henan Province, three outstanding young people supported by the Natural Science Foundation of Henan Province, three leading talents in Central Plains scientific and technological innovation, and seven top-notch young talents in the Central Plains. It also has two innovative scientific and technological teams in Henan Province, namely "Information Processing and Intelligent Control of Electrical Equipment" and "Bioinformation Processing", as well as three scientific and technological innovation teams in colleges and universities in Henan Province. In 2025, the "Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control" teaching team was approved as the "National University Huang Danian-style Teaching Team".

Teaching and Research

The school has established eleven provincial scientific research platforms, including the Henan Key Laboratory of Advanced Electrical Control Technology, the Academician Workstation of Ultra-wideband Wireless Communication Technology in Henan Province, the International Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Micro-grid in Henan Province, the Engineering Technology Research Center of Electrical Testing and Fault Diagnosis in Henan Province, the Engineering Technology Research Center of Information Interconnection for Intelligent Equipment in Henan Province, the Key Laboratory of Power Electronics and Power Conversion in China's Light Industry, the Engineering Research Center of Special Motors and Drive Technology in Henan Province, the Engineering Technology Research Center of Industrial Control Network in Henan Provincial Universities, the Innovation Laboratory for the Development of Big Data on Intelligent Perception and Control, the Innovation Center for the Integration of Big Data in the Smart Grid Industry, and the Engineering Technology Research Center of New Energy Power System in Henan Province. In addition, it has the "Electrical Control Technology" teaching team in higher education institutions in Henan Province. The total value of instruments and equipment exceeds 82 million yuan. It has jointly built 5 school-enterprise innovation laboratories with General Electric, Siemens and other companies.

Scientific Research Achievements

In the past five years, the school has undertaken 181 provincial-level and above vertical research projects, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The total funds received for scientific research reached 128 million yuan. A total of 816 papers were published with the school as the first affiliation, 19 academic monographs and textbooks were published, and 213 invention patents have been authorized. It has won 1 First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China National Light Industry Council (as the leading institution), 13 Second Prizes and 1 Third Prize for Science and Technology Progress of Henan Province, 1 Third Prize for Technology Invention of Henan Province, 1 Second Prize for Natural Science of Henan Province, 1 Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China National Textile and Apparel Council, 1 Special Prize and 3 Second Prizes of the China General Chamber of Commerce Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 Second Prize in the China Invention Association's Invention Achievement Award, 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize of Science and Technology Progress Awards from the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, and 1 First Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Henan Instrument and Meter Association. Additionally, the awards received for participating projects include: 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize for the Henan Province Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Second Prize for the Ministry of Education Technology Invention Award, 1 Second Prize for the China Invention Association's Entrepreneurship Achievement Award, 1 Second Prize for its Innovation Award, 1 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions Award, 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize for the China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award, and 1 First Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the China Instrument and Meter Association.

Talent Cultivation

The school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "establishing the school with quality, prospering the school with talents, strengthening the school with scientific research, and highlighting the school with characteristics". It fully implements the CPC's educational policy and the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, and is committed to cultivating outstanding talents with firm beliefs, a sense of responsibility, and both moral integrity and professional competence for the country. It has constructed a four-level collaborative management and education system of "academic tutor + doctoral class teacher + counselor + senior Party member student", forming a good pattern of educating people in an all-round, whole-process, and omnidirectional manner.

The school focuses on strengthening students' engineering practical ability and innovation capability. By vigorously opening professional laboratories, it mainly cultivates students' innovative spirit and engineering practical ability with remarkable results. In the past five years, it has won 1 Second Prize of the national teaching achievement award; 2 Special Prizes and 3 First Prizes of the Henan Provincial teaching achievement awards. In discipline competitions such as the Electronic Design Competition and the China Intelligent Manufacturing Challenge, students have won 1321 awards at or above the provincial level. Among them, there are 1 national Special Prize and 20 national First Prizes. A total of 3376 student participations have been involved, and 16 national-level college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects have been applied for and funded.

The school has established the "Sunshine Electric" teacher-student volunteer service team, which has carried out volunteer activities such as free household appliance repair and safe electricity use publicity all year round. Among them, the free household appliance repair service project has been carried out for 40 years, benefiting more than 20 cities in the province. It has won the First Prize of the excellent project in the "Three Rural" social practice activity in Henan Province, and was approved as an excellent national social practice brand project in 2023. In 2025, related volunteer activities were reported three times by mainstream media including the Xuexi Qiangguo Zhengzhou Learning Platform and China Daily website, with the brand influence continuously growing.

International Cooperation

The school actively conducts international exchanges and cooperation and continuously improves the internationalization level of school-running. Since 2006, it has successively carried out international cooperation with 30 foreign universities, such as Griffith University in Australia, Tennessee State University in the United States, VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, École Polytechnique in France, Oakland University in the United States, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. More than 40 exchange students have been sent out in total, and 5 doctors have been jointly trained.

The school has cooperated with General Electric, Siemens, Microchip Technology, and Sunplus Technology to establish school-enterprise co-built innovation and entrepreneurship practice bases, such as the GE Automation System Integration Laboratory and the Siemens Industrial Control Innovation Laboratory.

In the new era, the school will earnestly implement the spirit of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC.
