| I. Overview The history of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering (SEIE) of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry (ZZULI) begins with the Department of Automation established at the beginning of ZZULI in 1977 and the Department of Home Appliances established in 1979. In 1984, the Department of Control Engineering was established, which was renamed the Department of Information and Control Engineering in 1999 and the School of Electrical and Information Engineering in 2004. At present, SEIE has a total of 2,052 undergraduate and postgraduate students, with five full-time undergraduate majors, including Electrical Engineering and Automation, Automation, Smart Grid Information Engineering, Rail Transit Signal and Control, and Robotics Engineering. Among them, the program of Electrical Engineering and Automation is a national first-class undergraduate candidate major, a certified major of China Engineering Education Accreditation Association, a pilot major in the Ministry of Education’s “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program”, and a pilot major of national-level comprehensive reform. SEIE has two provincial first-level key disciplines (Electrical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering), and one key characteristic discipline group of Henan Province (Intelligent Manufacturing of Electrical Equipment). SEIE currently has two first-level academic master’s degree programs (Electrical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering), and four professional master’s degree programs (Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics Engineering). II. Faculty SEIE constantly upholds a student-oriented and teacher-oriented approach, vigorously promotes the strategy of “College Strengthened by Talents”, gathers and cultivates a number of high-level discipline leaders and key academic teachers. There are one double-appointed academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Steering Chair Professor of the national Ten Thousand Talents Program, one provincial specially-appointed professor, two provincial outstanding teachers, one provincial outstanding expert, four provincial academic and technical leaders, seven outstanding talents in scientific and technological innovation and outstanding youths in Henan Province, three outstanding youths from the Natural Science Foundation of Henan Province, and six principal investigators in the Central Plains Talent Program (three for Career Education Series and three for Leadership Series). There are two provincial innovative technology teams, i.e., Electrical Equipment Information Processing and Intelligent Control and Biological Information Processing, and three scientific and technological innovation teams in Henan Provincial universities. III. Teaching and Research Platforms SEIE has established 11 provincial-level research platforms, namely Henan Key Lab of Information based Electrical Appliances, Henan Province Ultra Wide Band Wireless Communication Technology Academician Workstation, International Joint Lab for Smart Micro-Grid of Henan, Henan Electric Test and Fault Diagnosis Engineering Research Center, Intelligent Equipment Information Interconnection Engineering Technology Research Center of Henan, Key Laboratory of Power Electronics and Electric Energy Conversion in China Light Industry, Henan Province Engineering Research Center of Special Motor and Drive Technology, Industrial Control Network Engineering Technology Research Center for Universities of Henan Province, Intelligent Sensing and Control Big Data Development Innovation Laboratory, Smart Grid Big Data Industry Fusion Innovation Center, and Henan New Energy Electrical Power System Engineering Technology Research Center. It has an “Electrical Control Technology” Teaching Team of Higher Education of Henan Province. Its instruments and equipment amount to more than 82 million yuan, and it has built five university-enterprise innovation laboratories with General Motors of the United States and Siemens of Germany. IV. Research Achievements In the past five years, SEIE has presided over 156 vertical projects above provincial level, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China; together with the cooperative units, SEIE has won one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one first prize and one second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of China National Textile And Apparel Council, one first prize and 11 second prizes of the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, one second prize of the Technical Invention Prize of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. In addition, it has obtained 246 authorized invention patents, 153 million yuan of total funding for scientific research, and published 541 academic papers as first author, of which 438 are indexed in SCI and 36 in JCR Q1, and 29 academic monographs and textbooks. V. Talent Cultivation According to idea of “quality, talent, research, and distinction”, SEIE carries out the Party's education policy in a comprehensive manner, implements the fundamental task of moral education, and devotes itself to cultivating outstanding talents with strong beliefs, great sense of responsibility, and a balance of morality and knowledge. A four-level aligned management system has been formed by tutors, class advisers served by doctors, school instructors, fellow students in a higher grade as party members. Focusing on strengthening students' engineering practice ability and innovation ability, SEIE make more efforts to cultivate students' innovation spirit and engineering practice ability by vigorously opening up professional laboratories, which has scored remarkable results. In the last 5 years, out students have obtained 581 awards above the provincial level in disciplinary competitions such as Electronic Design Competition, Intelligent Vehicle Competition, and China Intelligent Manufacturing Challenge, among which 19 are national special prizes and first prizes. The number of participants has reached nearly 1,700. More than 20 projects have been approved and granted funding in the National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, and more than 60 patents have been applied for and authorized. VI. International Exchange SEIE actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation, and constantly improves the internationalization level. Since 2006, it has carried out cooperation with 30 foreign universities, including Griffith University in Australia, Tennessee State University in the United States, Ostrava University of Technology in the Czech Republic, École Polytechnique in France, University of Auckland in the United States, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and has sent more than 30 students on international exchange, and has jointly cultivated 5 doctors. SEIE has cooperated with General Electric of the United States, Siemens AG of Germany, Microchip Technology Incorporated of the United States, and Sunplus Technology of Taiwan to establish GE Automation System Integration Laboratory, Siemens Industrial Control Innovation Laboratory, and other university-enterprise integrated innovation and entrepreneurship practice bases. In the new era, SEIE will conscientiously follow the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and act on the university motto of “nothing is too difficult for the willing mind”, the university spirit of “plain, pragmatic, and prudent” and the teaching ethos of “Establishing Virtue and Learning by Doing”. It will adhere to the education idea of “Quality, Talent, Research and Distinction,” deepen the comprehensive reform of teaching and learning, and make efforts for the construction of a high-level teaching and researching school that has distinctive characteristics of academic disciplines and majors, marked advantages, strong core competitiveness, a leading position among the province's similar colleges and universities, and a certain degree of influence in China.
