College profile
The College of Political Science and Law was established in 2000. Its predecessor was the department of law and politics. The college is the chairman unit of Henan Social Work Education Association, the rotating chairman unit of China Social Work Education Association (Central China), the group executive director unit of China Social Work Education Association, and the member unit of the Alliance of International Social Work Colleges. The college has three undergraduate majors in social work, the science of law and public utilities management, one academic master’s degree authorization point in social work and social rule of law, and one professional master’s degree authorization point (MSW) in social work. The major of social work is a national “First-class Undergraduate” professional construction point, a provincial professional comprehensive reform pilot major, an excellent grass-roots teaching organization in colleges and universities in Henan province, and the major of public utilities management and the science of law are provincial “First-class Undergraduate” professional construction points.
The college has a well-structured faculty, not only renowned academic experts, but also a large number of young and middle-aged academic backbones who have made great achievements in relevant disciplines. There are 52 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 5 professors, 9 associate professors and 7 distinguished professors. There are 34 teachers with doctoral degrees. 10 teachers were rated separately as outstanding young and middle-aged jurists in Henan province, outstanding young social science experts in Henan province, outstanding scholars of philosophy and social sciences in colleges and universities in Henan province, 100 outstanding young social science theoretical talents in Henan province, annual figures of philosophy and social sciences in colleges and universities in Henan province, academic and technical leaders of the department of education of Henan province and leading talents of professional social work in Henan province. 3 teachers were rated as young backbone teachers in colleges and universities in Henan province, 3 teachers were rated as scientific and technological innovation talents in colleges and universities in Henan province, and 4 teachers were rated as school level famous teachers.
The college now has a key research base of humanities and social sciences in colleges and universities in Henan province—Social Development Research Center of Zhengzhou University of Light Industry; One key research base of humanities and social sciences of Henan federation of social sciences—Henan Big Data and Grass-roots Governance Research Center; One provincial key discipline—Sociology. The college has 2 innovation teams of philosophy and social sciences in colleges and universities in Henan province, “Research on diversified settlement mechanism of social disputes” and “refinement of social governance and public policy choice”. The college has 3 on campus practice teaching platforms: mock court, TPR integration training center of social work, public management practice training center and a professional library. More than 60 stable off campus practice bases have been built in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Luoyang and other places.
The major of social work and public utilities management ranked first in the professional evaluation of Henan province in 2017. “History of China’s Legal System” was rated as the “First-class Course” in Henan province, “Youth Social Work” and “Western Economics” were rated as the first prize and third prize of excellent online teaching courses of undergraduate education in Henan province respectively, and 7 courses such as “Introduction to Sociology” were approved as school-level boutique online open courses.
The college has won nearly 100 projects above the provincial and ministerial level in recent years, including 14 National Social Science Foundation projects and 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects. The college has won 5 outstanding achievement awards in philosophy and social sciences of Henan province. Many famous experts at home and abroad are invited to give lectures and the college conduct joint research with many well-known colleges and universities at home on a regular basis.
The college attaches importance to the implementation of “people-oriented and four returns”, adheres to the training concept of “student-centered” and improves the quality of talent training. At present, there are more than 940 ordinary full-time undergraduates and postgraduates. In 2020, the passing rate of law students participating in the legal vocational qualification examination was 21%, which was higher than the average proportion; Postgraduate entrance examination rate of students majoring in social work is 33.3%, ranking the leading level of the whole university. Graduates enjoy a high degree of social recognition. A group of outstanding graduates such as China’s 100 most beautiful social workers, the first batch of supervision personnel training objects in Henan province, the first batch of professional social work leading talents in Zhengzhou, Shenzhen supervision star and Shenzhen’s top ten social workers are active in the main battlefield of economic and social development all over the country. The college actively organizes and carries out various activities aiming at improving students’ professional quality, such as lectures on humanities and social sciences, simulated trials, social cognition, social investigation and legal knowledge competitions. It has won awards in the national college students “Challenge Cup” competition, Henan social work case competition, “Capital Cup” college debate competition, college students’ science, technology, culture and art festival and other competitions.
