“Laboratory of Surface and Interface Science” was built on the base of the “Laboratory of Applied Chemistry” of former key lab of National Ministry of Light Industry and has been supported by the Henan Provincial Key Discipline of “Applied Chemistry” for years. In April 2007, Science & Technology Bureau of Henan Province approved the foundation of“State Laboratory of Surface & Interface Science and Technology, Henan, China.

The SLSIST has recruited 51 full-time faculties including one Fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering, three Yangtze River Scholars, 22 professors as well as 34 members with doctorates. The academician and Yangtze River Scholars form the academic advisory board of the laboratory, while middle-aged and young professors act as the backbone of this high-level research & academic team. The SLSIST boasts of 2100 square meters working area, advanced equipment with values more than ￥40,000,000, and facilities including the spectrometer room, the chromatography room, the morphology detection room, the surface & interface detection room, the structure detection room, and the thermal properties detection room, etc.

The SLSIST obeys its commitments of self renovation, selective development, and serving Henan’s economy. Based on its own foundation and advantages, the SLSIST is going to be an influential base of R&D, renovation and cultivation of talents with a focus on five research fields: surface & interface science and technology of polymers, surface modification of materials and electrode interface properties, interface properties and application of gas (liquid)/solid phases, synthesis and properties of amphiphilic molecules, controllable preparation of functional nanomaterials, and micro-fabrication of nano-devices. This lab has been the base for three provincial key disciplines (i.e., applied chemistry, materials science, chemical technology), five master’s degree program (i.e., applied chemistry, materials science, chemical technology, chemical engineering, materials physics and chemistry), and two innovation teams of Henan Provincial Bureau of Science and Technology and Henan Provincial Bureau of Education, respectively. Since April 2007, the laboratory has received 43 NSFC projects, one Science and Technology Research project from the Ministry of Education, and 55 other projects (such as Significant Technical Projects of Henan Province, Outstanding talent Project of Henan Province, Outstanding Youth Foundation of Henan Province, Henan Science and Technology Innovation Talents in Universities, and projects cooperated with China Shenma Group Company and Lihua Pharmaceutical Group Company). During recent years, this lab has published more than 520 papers, of which more than 320 were cited by SCI/EI/ISTP, and has reported more than 33 the country patent of invention, of which more than 20 were authorized. 85 graduate students have received their master’s degrees for almost three years. Currently 101master’s students and 12 union-education doctoral students are enrolled in this lab.

The research of this lab mainly focuses on the surface and interface science and pursues primitive innovations as well as team innovations. To keep abreast of the national laboratories, the SLSIST will be constructed to a base for science research, technology innovations, and talents cultivation.
