As an academic institute affiliated to SFL, the Center of Translation Studies (hereafter referred to as CTS), specializing in both theoretical research and translation practice, was established in October 2005 to satisfy the need of translation teaching and translator training. The aim of CTS is to provide a place for teachers to do translation study, explore translation theories and practice and serve translation teaching and research.

Main tasks of CTS

1) promote disciplinary development, set an example in language research, and organize various research activities, such as organize teachers to apply for provincial and national research projects, instruct teachers to write and publish papers, compile translation textbooks, etc.

2) organize  academic exchange activities in translation, help teachers attend translation academic conferences at home and abroad, and invite experts to give lectures;

3) undertake translation tasks assigned by school leaders or entrusted by governments;

4) undertake teaching tasks , carry out research in translation teaching, and instruct students to do translation practice.

The contents of the research of CTS have the following three features: 1) It is interdisciplinary. The members of CTS conduct their translation studies from different disciplinary perspectives, such as text linguistics, applied linguistics, culturology, literature and art studies. New achievements came out continuously. 2) It stresses on the combination of macro and micro research, and the combination of Chinese and Western translation theories. The macro-research explores the external factors of translation such as culture and ideology; while the micro-research of translation is carried out from different perspectives and levels, such as contrastive analysis of language structure, stylistic norms and aesthetic differences. CTC members not only emphasize the introduction of western translation theories, but also pay great attention to inherit Chinese traditional translation theories. Moreover, we aim to combine Western translation theories with Chinese traditional translation theories to broaden our horizons and promote innovation. 3) We pay equal attention to translation theories and translation practice, especially practical translation and Chinese classical translation.

There are two professors, five associate professors and five lectures in CTS, which is an appropriate organization to carry out classical translation, aesthetic translation and cultural translation. They are the main academic orientations in CTS currently.

The translation research team in CTS has high academic attestation, and the members include three professors, six teachers with PhD degree and eleven   master supervisors. The teachers teach English, Korean, Japanese and other language courses. The team has undertaken two National Social Science Fund projects and 6 provincial and ministerial projects, published more than 10 books and about 50 papers about translation in Journal of Northwest Normal University, Journal of Henan Normal University, Henan Social Sciences and other well-known journals.A translation team in Henan has been set up here and many of the team members are, meanwhile, the expert members of Provincial Foreign Affairs Office (hereafter referred to as PFAO). They have been responsible for the translation tasks of PFAO for a long time.
