In order to meet the needs of national strategies and social development, Zhengzhou University of light Industry trains high-quality compound English talents in light industry based on the specialty of Central Plain. We are in the hope of training high-quality application-oriented talents who are knowledgeable in English language and literature and have a good mastery of skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, and who are equipped with extensive humanistic knowledge, broad international perspective, proficient intercultural communication awareness, strong practical competence, as well as innovative awareness. After graduation, they can become high-quality compound English talents and will be competent for jobs in general and specific fields such as ceramic art, handicrafts, intangible cultural heritage translation and transmission, foreign trade, and engage in language services, foreign language education, international trade and so on.

Students should complete 168 credits of the required courses in the training plan, including 108 credits for compulsory theoretical courses, 21 credits for elective theoretical courses, 35 credits for practical teaching, and 4 credits for innovation and entrepreneurship practice platforms.
Description of Main Discipline
Comprehensive English: This course aims to develop students' language communication ability by comprehensively using English language knowledge and skills. After learning this course, students should be able to correctly identify and use standard English pronunciation and intonation, adapt to the major English variants; identify various words and their grammar forms, master common word formation, basic sentence patterns and syntactic structures; identify different writing styles and vernacular styles, skillfully use various means of cohesion, common rhetoric, different style writing skills, interpretation, translation and translation methods, use knowledge and skills to critically discuss practical problems or hot topics in real life, and cultivate critical thinking ability.
English Reading: This course aims to cultivate students' English reading ability and critical thinking ability. After learning this course, students should master the basic knowledge of English and have certain social and cultural knowledge of English countries; skillfully use common English reading strategies; distinguish facts and opinions; infer the meaning and implied meaning from context, summarize the general idea of the paragraph and the main idea of the passage; analyze writing styles, vernacular styles, structure, rhetoric and writing techniques of the text, analyze and evaluate emotion, attitude, and aims of authors, and contrast different chapters of the same or related topics.
Audio-visual English: This course aims to develop students’ ability to understand English sounds and videos and verbally express relevant content. Through course learning, students should be able to correctly identify the pronunciation and intonation of standard English and its common variants; distinguish the main meaning and details, infer implied meaning, summarize general ideas; quickly record points and outline; use notes to report, retell, outline and evaluate audio-visual content; discuss audio-visual content around the unit theme, and summarize and report the discussion results orally.
English Writing: This course aims to develop students' ability to express themselves in written English. Through course learning, students should master the basic knowledge and skills of English writing, write various essays; understand the basic norms and methods of academic writing, and can write small-scale research reports and papers independently; develop good writing habits and have certain critical writing ability.
English-Chinese Translation:This course aims to cultivate students’ ability to translate English and Chinese using translation theories and methods. Through course learning, students should master the main theories, methods and quality standards of translation; understand the chapter characteristics and cultural differences between English and Chinese; can translate difficult articles in English and Chinese newspapers, magazines, books, novels, essays, plays and other literary works, speed to 300~350 words per hour; can independently undertake the English-Chinese translation of ordinary employers.
Advanced English: The task of this course is to help students (1) improve reading comprehension ability, correctly understand the content and theme, grasp the article and focus, analyze the structure, language skills and rhetorical characteristics; (2) improve language expression ability, use English to summarize the subject of the article, make simple analysis and comment on the content of the article; (3) enrich cultural knowledge, especially the background and culture of the language countries we have learned, so as to better combine language with culture.
Introduction to English Linguistics: The course aims to cultivate students’ rational understanding of human’s language and improve students’ language and cultural awareness and critical thinking ability.Through learning this course, students should be able to master the basic concepts, principles and methods of linguistics; understand the basic branches and main theoretical schools of linguistics; understand the main fields, topics and development trends of interdisciplinary application and research of linguistics; observe and analyze language phenomena to promote foreign language learning.
British Literature: This course makes an introduction to the history of British literature to familiarize students with its development, and offers an intensive reading of masterpieces of various schools in different periods to familiarize them with the features of different schools. This course aims to deepen their understanding of British literature and culture, their basic linguistic competence, their ability of independent thinking and literature appreciation.
American literature: This course provides students with an overview of the development of American literature and familiarizes them with the major writers by summarizing the history of American literature; introduces the basic knowledge and methods of literary criticism by reading and analyzing representative works of various genres such as novels, poems and plays in the main stages, enhances students' understanding of American literature and culture, promotes the improvement of students' basic language skills and their ability to appreciate literary works, to develop their independent thinking skills, and to the basic knowledge and methods of literary criticism.
Intercultural communication: This course aims to help students understand cultural phenomena, adapt to cultural differences, and improve cross-cultural communication skills. Through course learning, students should be able to master the basic concepts, basic theories and basic methods of intercultural communication; respect the diversity of world culture, enhance critical cultural awareness, and explain and evaluate different cultural phenomena; appropriately and effectively conduct intercultural communication and help people from different cultural backgrounds.
Summary of Chinese Culture: This course aims at enabling students to have a deep understanding of China’s long history, splendid culture and excellent literary tradition, cultivate students’ pride and love for Chinese culture, expand their cultural vision, and enrich their cultural connotations. Through the course learning, students should be able to introduce China's historical development track, basic national conditions, local conditions, folk customs and other general humanistic knowledge to the world, and have a strong sense of cross-cultural exchange and communication, able to respect cultural diversity in the world and achieve effective communication in cross-cultural exchanges.
History of Western Civilization: This course aims at helping students understand the development process of western civilization, while continuing to consolidate the foundation of English, expand cultural vision, improve humanistic quality and logical thinking ability. Through course learning, students should be familiar with special words and specific expressions related to western politics, economy, religion, literature and art, science and technology; understand the historical development of western civilization, master the major historical events and major humanistic thoughts in each historical period; use the knowledge to rationally analyze western civilization, compare and think with eastern civilization, and form their own unique opinions.
English Interpretation: This course aims to develop students’ English and Chinese and English oral translation skills. Through the course, students should master the basic theories and common interpretation strategies and skills, fluent language skills, good memory, logical thinking and adaptability ability, develop the habit of caring about current events, oral introduction and interpretation of hot topics, and competent to receive foreign guests, tour guides, general meetings and business negotiations.
Research Methods and Academic Writing: This course aims to train students to master the basic research methods of humanities and social sciences, so as to develop their ability to write academic papers in English. Through course learning, students can understand the standards and characteristics of scientific research, have the consciousness of academic ethics, have certain humanities and social science research methods and innovation ability; understand the basic requirements and methods of English academic paper writing, master the format and norms of English academic paper writing, can use appropriate research methods to engage in scientific research and write standardized scientific research papers.
