Korean Major

1.    Educational Objectives and Career Prospects

In order to meet the demand for talents of non-common languages in economic construction and social development, Korean Major is designed to cultivate talents with national and social responsibilities, solid Korean knowledge, abundant knowledge in language, literature as well as culture, and good English application ability. They will have international perspectives and intercultural communication awareness, and be competent for jobs related to foreign affairs, tourism, news media, international trade, finance, education and translation.

Introduction to Core Courses

Integrated Korean: This is a basic compulsory course for Korean majors in colleges and universities, lasting for six semesters. With texts as the center, grammatical knowledge as the clue and translation exercises as the supplement, this course comprehensively trains students’ four linguistic abilities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and their translation ability in order to cultivate students’ abilities of overall language comprehension and application.

Spoken Korean: This is a basic compulsory course for Korean majors, lasting for three semesters. The task of this course is, through a lot of oral exercises and practice, to cultivate students’ ability to communicate in Korean gradually, express their thoughts accurately, make their pronunciation, intonation and grammar correct basically, and use appropriate words and expressions relatively.

Korean Reading: This is a basic compulsory course for Korean majors, lasting for two semesters. The course, a course in which only one single skill is trained, places particular emphasis on the reading skills. It requires students to gradually master all kinds of reading methods so as to improve their accuracy of comprehension and enhance their reading speed. It cultivates students’ ability to acquire and process information quickly and accurately through reading.

Korean Writing: This is an important practice course for Korean majors, lasting for four semesters. It aims at cultivating students’ basic skills in Korean Writing, including sentence writing, essays writing and practical writing. Students will possess the writing ability in Korean to some extent after learning this course.

Korean: Advanced Viewing, Listening & Speaking: This is a compulsory basic teaching and practice course for Korean majors to improve students’ listening ability, lasting for three semesters. With novel audio materials and advanced technology-enhanced teaching method in the world, this course aims at improving students’ listening and expressing ability, and making them possess good communicating ability in Korean.

Korean-Chinese Translation: This is a major compulsory course for Korean majors. It mainly teaches students common theories and skills in translation as well as some special theories and skills in Korean and Chinese, which aims at improving students’ practical ability in Korean-Chinese translation and helping them meet the basic requirements of employment after graduation.

Comprehensive English: This is a basic compulsory course for Korean majors, lasting for six semesters. It mainly involves standard pronunciation and intonation of English, various word classes and their grammatical forms, common word-formation, the usage of basic sentence patterns and syntactic structures and the conversion, interpretation and translation methods of long and difficult sentences. The aim of this course is to cultivate Korean majors tomake comprehensive use of English language knowledge and skills in language communication.

Intercultural communication: This is a major optional course for Korean majors. It focuses on introducing Korean culture and helps students understand the general situation of Korean society and culture through teaching materials and various practices. Meanwhile, by comparing with Chinese culture, it aims to enhance students' understanding of Korean culture and improve their ability of intercultural communication.

An Introduction to Chinese Culture: This is an optional course for Korean majors. It mainly involves the developing process, characteristics and component parts of Chinese culture, and aims to enable students to have a deep understanding of the main contents, ideologies and characters in traditional culture, and analyze cultural phenomena by relevant knowledge and theories.
