The School of Foreign Languages (hereafter referred to as SFL) was established in 2013 on the basis of the original Department of Foreign Languages founded in 1999. It has set three undergraduate majors, namely English, Korean, and Chinese International Education founded in 1999, 2005 and 2007, respectively. Of these majors, the English major is the national construction point of the first-class undergraduate major, and the English Department is the excellent grass-roots teaching organization in Henan Province. “English-Chinese Translation” course is entitled “Excellent Resource Sharing Course in Henan Province” “Basic English Writing” is an excellent online open course for colleges and universities in Henan Province, “Chinese-English Translation” is a model ideological and political course for undergraduate colleges and universities in Henan Province, and Comprehensive English and “English seeing the World” are among the online and offline first-class courses in Henan Province. Korean is the major with features and the only and sole undergraduate major among regular colleges and universities in Henan. The major of Chinese international education is the construction point of the first-class undergraduate major in Henan. The college Chinese group is “Henan Excellent Teaching Group”.

Currently, the following teaching units have been set in SFL, that is, English Department, Korean Department, Chinese International Education Department, College English Teaching Department (I and II), and Center of Languages. Research centers are also established, including “Sino-Korean Culture Research Institute”, “Translation Research Center”, “Centre of Shakespearean Studies”, “Linguistics Research Center”, “Teaching and Learning Research Center”, “Research Base for Extraterritorial Communication of Yellow River Culture”, “Henan Research Center for Translation and Communication of Intangible Cultural Heritage” . Meanwhile, it is also the supporting unit of “Henan Chanting Association”, which is the first provincial chanting association in China. It has been entitled the authority of granting master’s degree in MTI(Master of Translation and Interpretation) and in International Chinese Education.

There are 94 teaching staff, including 83 full time teachers. Among these teachers, 33 are professors and associate professors, and 23 have doctoral degree. Quite a few of them were awarded the titles of “National Excellent Teacher”, “Youth Backbone Teachers in Colleges and Universities of Henan Province”, “Academic Leaders Sponsored by Department of Education of Henan Province” , “Teaching Model of Henan Province” and “Civilized Teacher in Henan Province”, etc.

SFL has well-equipped teaching and learning facilities, which provide a comfortable and convenient environment for study and research. There are 20 digital language laboratories with a total seating capacity of 1260, 1 sophisticated simultaneous interpretation laboratory, 1 intelligent translation training room, 1 Sino-Korean cultural experience room and 1 resource center with more than 20,000 books and 72 Chinese and foreign journals.

College English Teaching Department undertakes the task of college English teaching of ZZULI at all levels. College English was entitled “Excellent Course in Henan Province” in 1998, “Excellent Course in ZZULI” in 2007 and the first-class course in Henan Province in 2019.

SLF attaches great importance to foreign academic exchange. Recently, 30 teachers have ever been sponsored by National Scholarship Program to visit Britain, USA, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, Korea and Japan, etc. as scholars or Chinese teachers. In the meantime, some students have been recommended to Korea, USA, Malaysia, etc. to study or carry out practice every year.

There are nearly 700 students in SFL. The pass percentages of TEM-4 and TEM-8 of English majors, Intermediate Korean and Advanced Korean of Korean majors and CET-4 of Chinese International Education majors are all higher than the average level of those peer universities and colleges. The graduates are popular with employing units owing to their solid basic knowledge, excellent comprehensive quality, and high practice ability. Therefore, the employment quality and rate in SLF rank top in ZZULI.
