At the end of 2024, the Chinese Spring Festival was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To better promote the traditional Spring Festival culture, the Office of International Relations invited foreign teachers and students on campus to participate in the cultural experience activity of the Intangible Cultural Heritage-Themed New Year Festival, which was held at the Dongfeng Campus on January 2, 2025. They immersed themselves in experiencing the Spring Festival folk customs and the intangible cultural heritages of Henan to celebrate the bustling and colorful Chinese New Year.
This activity was hosted by the Office of International Relations and the School of Art & Design, and undertaken by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center. In the form of marketplace, the foreign teachers and students experienced folk customs, such as woodblock New Year prints crafting, relief printing, movable type printing, roller printing, Spring Festival couplets writing, Hanfu donning, lion dance performance, and paper cutting. In addition, intangible cultural heritage inheritors' handicrafts were also displayed, including Xunxian County Nigugu, Shaking Head Lion, Cloth Tiger, ceramics, and lacquerware.
During the event, the foreign teachers and students were bursting with enthusiasm for these folk customs and eagerly visited different stalls to gain firsthand experience. Some dressed in beautiful Hanfu to took selfies, showing their great interest in Hanfu culture. Some lingered at the front of the ceramic stall to appreciate the ceramics made by the intangible cultural heritage inheritors and were loath to part with the ceramics. Some imitated the bearing of ancient scholars to write a series of lovable lucky character Fu and send them out for Chinese New Year blessings. Others put on the costumes of lion dancers and cooperated in pairs to perform lion dance vividly. The on-site atmosphere was lively with continuous laughter.
This event fully demonstrated the historical heritage, craftsmanship spirit, oriental aesthetics, national charm, and Chinese wisdom of Chinese culture, and showcased the ever-lasting and ever-evolving vitality of intangible cultural heritages in the new era. Through this event, the foreign teachers and students have gained a further understanding and recognition of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival culture and felt the charm of Chinese folk art.
