The Henan Key Laboratory of Data Intelligence on Food Safety (hereinafter referred to as the "Lab") is dedicated to the research and development of fundamental theories and applied technologies regarding intelligent data analysis for food quality, intelligent data tracing and analysis system for food safety, and early warning system for food safety. With a comprehensive big data platform that integrates multi-source information related to food safety and embraces deep learning and AI technologies, the Lab enables the intelligent processing of massive food safety data. On this basis, the Lab advances the research on a food traceability platform and transforms food safety governance from government-driven supervision into broad-based public oversight. Covering a total area of 2,263 square meters, it is equipped with scientific research instruments worth more than RMB 26 million. The Lab currently has 42 core faculty members, including 13 professors, 8 associate professors, and 37 PhD holders. Among them, there are three distinguished professors, two recipients of Outstanding Innovative Talents in Henan, and four recipients of Science and Technology Innovation Talents in Higher Education Institutions of of Henan. Over the past five years, the Lab has formed partnerships with leading global universities for joint PhD programs and mutual exchanges of young scholars. These universities include New Jersey Institute of Technology, Federation University Australia, the University of Edinburgh, University of London, Heriot-Watt University, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Between 2013 and 2014, three delegations of academic leaders and scholars were assigned to Edinburgh Napier University for a week-long academic exchange. In 2014, a 17-member delegation underwent a 21-day intensive training program at Caltech and the USDA FoodData Central. In July 2016, a group of young and middle-aged scholars took part in a week-long training program at Federation University Australia, where they explored practices in discipline construction, scientific research, team building, and talent training. In September 2016, a group of 15 backbone teachers under the age of 40 and with a PhD degree from the distinctive discipline (group) engaged in a two-week training program on food safety at the University of East London and Manchester Metropolitan University.
