The School of Mathematics and Information Sciences originated from the Mathematics Teaching and Research Section founded in 1978. The Department of Information and Computational Science wasformally set upin June 2002, and theinstitutionwas officially renamed the School of Mathematics and Information Sciences in July 2013. It comprises teaching and research units including the Department of Information and Computational Science, the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, the Department of Data Science, the First Teaching Division of University Mathematics, the Second Teaching Division of University Mathematics, the Mathematical Modelling Innovation Centre, the Centre for Applied Mathematics, and the Mathematical Experiment and Practical Teaching Centre. The school currentlyhas 70 faculty members, nearly half of whom hold senior professional titles, while 44 teachers possess doctoral degrees. Among full-time academic staff, there are 34 postgraduate supervisors,1 recipient of the Henan Excellent Youth Fund, 2 Provincial Outstanding Teachers of Henan Undergraduate Universities, 4 Henan Teaching Model Teachers, 5 Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers of Henan Province, 3 Academic and Technical Leaders from the Henan Provincial Department of Education, 1 Outstanding Craftsman Talent of the Henan Education Science Culture Health and Sports Trade Union System, and 9 teachers with other provincial-level or above honorary titles. More than ten staff members have overseas study or work experience. The school is authorised to confer Master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Mathematics and the second-level discipline of Information and Computational Science. It also offers professional Master’s programmes under the Electronic Information discipline across three specialisms: Control Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data Technology and Engineering. Applied Mathematics and Engineering Sciencehas been recognised as key provincial discipline in the latest round of Henan Provincial Key Disciplines. Three undergraduate programmes are available: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational Science, and Data Science. Among these, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Information and Computational Science are recognised as Henan Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Programme Development Sites. The school has a total enrollment of more than 650 undergraduates and postgraduates. The school operates provincial and university-level research platforms such as the Henan Centre for Applied Mathematics and the Research Centre for Statistics and Data Science. It also runs university-level innovative research teams including those for Partial Differential Equations and Integrable Systems, and Numerical Computation for Nonlinear Systems. Stable research groups have been formed across fields such as differential equations, algebraic topology, scientific computing, intelligent control, biomathematics, applied statistics and data analysis, yielding numerous high-quality research outputs. In recent years, the school hasled 22 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 50 provincial and departmental research projects, winning nearly 20 provincial and departmental research awards. Over 200 academic papers have been published, of which more than 150 are indexed by SCI and EI. Several papers have appeared in leading international journals including SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis and Journal of Differential Equations. The school also received the Top 10 Most Cited Paper Award (2005–2010) from the renowned international journal Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. Teaching resources include 1 national first-class course, 6 Henan provincial first-class courses, 3 Henan online open courses, 2 Henan high-quality resource sharing courses, 1 Henan high-quality video open course, 2Henan Provincial Model Courses for Curriculum Ideology and Politics, 1 Henan Postgraduate High-quality Online Course, and 1 Henan Provincial Demonstration Centre for Characteristic Teaching Research onCurriculum Ideology and Politics in Undergraduate Institutions. Almost 20 teaching auxiliary textbooks have been published, alongside 6 provincial teaching achievement awards and 2 Henan Provincial Textbook Construction Awards. Teachers from the school have won six national prizes across five consecutive sessions of the National University Mathematics Micro-lesson Teaching Design Competition. In recent years, students have secured more than 200 awards in subject competitions such as the National College Students’ Mathematical Modelling Competition and National College Mathematics Competition, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship contests including the Challenge Cup, China International College Students’ Innovation Competition, and Career Planning Competition – nearly 20 of these awards are national-level. A number of students have participated in exchange programmes or pursued Master’s and Doctoral degrees at overseas universities.
Information and Computational Science The Information andComputational Science program was established in 1999 and began to enroll students in 2000. In 2009, it was rated as a university-level characteristic major. In 2014, relying on this major, it was approved to independently set up a second-level master's degree in information andComputational science. In 2020, it was approved as aFirst-Class Undergraduate Programme Development Sites in Henan Province. Programme Objectives: In response to new demands of economic and social development, the programme adopts tailored teaching methods to cultivate high-quality applied research talents with all-round development in morality, intellect, physical fitness, aesthetics and labour education.
