The College of Food and Biological Engineering traces its origins back to the establishment of the undergraduate program in Food Engineering in 1980. In 1985, it was renamed the Department of Food Engineering, further changed to the Department of Food and Biological Engineering in 2000, and eventually elevated to the status of the College of Food and Biological Engineering in 2005. Over the years, the college has adhered to the integrated educational philosophy of values shaping, knowledge imparting, and skill development. It seamlessly integrates talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, and cultural heritage to continually enhance its disciplinary strengths, actively contributing to national and regional economic and social development.

The faculty boasts a robust and dedicated team. Grounded in the principle of cultivating strong talent, the college emphasizes both external recruitment and internal training. It has crafted a teaching, research, and management team that is enthusiastic, structurally sound, and excels in professional quality. The college currently employs over 130 faculty members, including more than 90 with doctoral degrees and over 70 holding senior academic titles. The faculty includes academicians, scholars from the central plains, provincially appointed professors, provincial academic and technical leaders, outstanding talents, and provincial teaching award recipients, totaling more than 30 individuals.

The talent cultivation system is comprehensive. The college places a strong emphasis on moral education, striving to develop outstanding individuals with clear political values, a strong sense of social service, profound theoretical knowledge in their respective fields, and strong innovative and practical abilities. This has resulted in a comprehensive talent cultivation system covering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. The college currently offers five undergraduate majors, including two nationally recognized first-class undergraduate programs, one nationally recognized distinctive program, two programs accredited by the China Engineering Education Certification, and one first-class undergraduate program in Henan Province. Additionally, there is one program offered in collaboration with foreign institutions.

The achievements in discipline construction are remarkable. The college has two primary disciplines: Food Science and Engineering, and Light Industry Technology and Engineering. These disciplines have successively been selected as key first-class disciplines in Henan Province, first-class disciplines at the provincial level, the first batch of advantageous characteristic discipline groups in Henan Province, and characteristic backbone discipline groups. In 2021, the Food Science and Engineering discipline obtained approval as a first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization point, and its global ranking in Agricultural Science entered the top 1% according to the ESI index. The Light Industry Technology and Engineering discipline was selected as a first-class discipline in Henan Province and received key project funding for the establishment of a doctoral degree point. Currently, the college has one doctoral degree authorization point and four master's degree authorization points.

The achievements in platform construction are fruitful. The college proactively aligns with the national Healthy China strategy, adhering to the broad view of food. Focusing on major demands in areas such as meat products, frozen foods, fruits and vegetables, and food safety, the college has established high-level research platforms in the field of food. It contributes to the construction of Henan's national innovation highland. The college currently possesses one key laboratory designated by the Ministry of Education (approved for establishment), one laboratory in Henan Province, and six other provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, as well as six innovation strategic alliances.

Looking forward, the college will continue to adhere to the motto It is easy to do what you set out to do; it is difficult not to do what you should do. Centered around the fundamental task of moral education, the college will use internal development as the starting point, academic innovation as the driving force, and strive to comprehensively enhance its core competitiveness, sustainable development capabilities, and social influence. The goal is to construct a high-level research-oriented college with excellent educational quality, distinctive disciplinary features, and significant competitive advantages, contributing to the construction of a high-level university in light industry.
